Mats Frans – K Beerschot VA : Interview
Name:Mats Frans Current club:K Beerschot VA Previous Club:Schelle Sport Birthday:10 mai 2007
How did you decide to play soccer, especially as a goalkeeper?
Meanwhile Mats Frans plays with the U13 of K. Beerschot VA and is already from his 5 years in the goal. One of them likes to be in the goal because he has to run less or because they got it from home. This is not the case with Mats, but because he likes to get dirty ? . That wasn’t so bad that he stayed goalkeeper.
Now we only ask ourselves the question what with the artificial turf fields Mats?
What goalkeepers do you admire?
From Buffon and Casillas you can certainly tell that they have won a lot of prizes in their beautiful careers. From World Cups, European Championships, Champions League, UEFA Cup and numerous national titles. This trophy cabinet alone is just to be jealous of. Are we going to look at the football qualities of a goalkeeper we will certainly end up at Ederson. The kicks, both short and long that this can give are phenomenal. Not always without risk, but because of the perfection often without consequences. A caress to the eye when you see this goalkeeper kicking or passing.
How would you define yourself as a goalkeeper?
Mats Frans would rather describe himself as someone who is very quiet in goal and always tries to be a resting point for his team by being playable. Not immediately named among his idols, but the playing style of Mats reminds us a bit of Neuer. He’s often playing high up and can not only push his team forward, but also intercept a lot of crosses or long balls that are dropped over the defense. Of course, anyone who wants to play high also needs sufficient coaching skills to steer the team so that this can be done as little as possible and there is no need to intervene, because of course there is always a risk of taking a red card.
What do you think is the most important quality a goalkeeper should have?
Technique, footballing ability, tranquillity, coaching and a strong mentality.
Did you expect your career as a goalkeeper to turn out the way she does now?
Like a modest young man, Mats has also had to work very hard to stand where he is now and even at this young age he realizes that he will always have to work hard to continue to develop and grow. He also wants to thank everyone from his trainers, acquaintances, friends and others for always supporting him. And precisely because of those people I can make evolution year after year that brings me to who I am.
How do you prepare yourself and your gloves for a competition?
As soon as we enter the locker room, concentration and the race begin. Our coaches then often start the technical meeting which he follows very closely in order to accomplish his task as a goalkeeper and to adjust during the game to what the coaches have asked for. If you now ask if he has a fixed pattern in how he puts his clothes on before the game, no superstition is not yet up to Mats, but of course never say never. That may come later ?
You don’t see it much anymore, but Mats is still someone who does his warming up with another pair of gloves. This way he prevents the competition gloves from getting dirty already and thus having less grip in the 90 minutes of truth. The competition gloves get a little wet after warming up, but not too much to not lose grip.
And how many gloves do you usually wear each year?
Training at least 5 pairs. Competition will also be at least 3 pairs. If we take a 20 matches this will be about 7 matches per pair of gloves. Because Mats French uses a separate pair for the matches. This way he always maintains the best grip during the match. Once these matches are over, the pair is of course not for the trash and can just be moved on to continue training.
Which brands did you play with before you discovered Prostar?
Mats Frans is one of our last Elite goalkeepers who joined the group not so long ago. That’s why he played the past games with Adidas. Field training he did with Nike and goalkeeper training with ProStar. Unfortunately because of the Corona virus the planning has changed a bit because after some training to test Prostar Mats also wanted to use Prostar for his matches because the fit and grip is really good.
Why did you start playing with ProStar or are you still playing with ProStar and didn’t go back to a well-known brand?
I’m currently playing my games with Adidas. Field training I do with Nike and goalkeeper training with ProStar. I was planning to play my next game with ProStar, but due to the Corona virus I think that will take some time. Anyway I’m going to do that because the fit and grip is really good.
What’s the hardest thing for a goalkeeper?
As a goalkeeper, you have to be able to grab balls and play along well, yet the mental aspect is often forgotten. As a goalkeeper, every mistake is often punished, which makes it incredibly difficult to keep on going. Still, you have to stay strong after every goal and say to yourself, ‘I’ve got the next one! Even if people who are not or have not been goalkeepers make negative comments, you should try to ignore that and continue to believe in yourself. Even the teammates of Mats Frans often don’t know what it’s like to be in goal while you could really use their support in difficult moments.
Finally, what advice would you give a young goalie?
Of course, I’m still a young goalkeeper myself. In any case, I believe in working very hard and after every setback, going back to hard. Try to get through difficult moments, both sportingly and mentally, by always believing in yourself. I look at it as if you’re reading a book. When the page has been read out, you turn the page and continue reading.
Do you want to stay in shape, too?
Contrary to what some think, every goalkeeper needs to be in sufficient condition. Do you want to maintain your condition and continue working to become even better as a goalkeeper? We have already drawn up a 5-week core stability program so that you stay in top shape.
