Name: Xander Achtergael Current club: Royal groenenhoek sport Previous Club: K. Ternesse vv Date of birth: 12 October 2000
How did you decide to play soccer, especially as a goalkeeper?
Xander Achtergael story didn’t start like most of us. In the beginning of his “soccer career” he was in the defense and he had to make sure that the goalkeeper got as little work as possible :-). After 3 years, the then goalkeeper stopped and the team started looking for a new goalkeeper. They were looking specifically behind a “fool” who wanted to be. Xander was immediately won for this idea and ended up in the goalkeeper world of “fools” since he was 8 years old. Now fools are sometimes said in the vernacular, but let’s keep it on the smartest of the field. A goalkeeper doesn’t just have to be good with his hands, he also has to have insight, coaching and good feet to be able to play soccer. Certainly his short period of time as a defender will help him think like a defender, allowing him to respond more quickly to his team-mates.
What goalkeepers do you admire?
Neuer a name that we’ll see often back here, we suspect. It is one of our best goalkeepers in the world who are admired by the beautiful rescues we can admire from him every week. Still, you often see Neuer playing soccer high up. Sometimes with (too much) risk, but who complains when you can admire his guts and courage on the soccer fields? Indeed there will be very few of them and rightly so. A lot of goalkeepers should be able to try this.
How would you define yourself as a goalkeeper?
Xander Achtergael would describe himself as a bit “foolish”, now we see this more as someone with just a little more guts than the average person among us. Personally this makes it easier in a 1 to 1 situation. Often you see a goalkeeper falling backwards in this situation. This often comes out of fear, but Xander has no problem with this. The attackers were warned about this one.
What do you think is the most important quality a goalkeeper should have?
As already stated, the position of a goalkeeper is one of the most demanding positions on the field. A goalkeeper must not only do that one handsome save, but must be able to be very concentrated for 90 minutes. Beyond that, as a goalkeeper you must also be able to be a field player One who can read the game well and make adjustments where necessary.
Did you expect your career as a goalkeeper to turn out the way she does now?
With this question we get a well-considered YES answer. Xander has always trained hard to work his way to the first team of Groenenhoek Sport at this young age and is also planning to work hard for a long time to keep this up and even take a few steps higher.
How do you prepare yourself and your gloves for a competition?
Going to sleep on time is a necessity for an athlete. After all, a good night’s sleep ensures that you can start the match fresh the next day. On top of that, you can stay much better concentrated during the match, which makes it easier to assist my team when needed. Whether that is with good rescues or with good coaching, Xander Achtergael doesn’t really matter. As long as his team ends the game with victory. The gloves are always wet before and during the race so they stay a little moist and the grip remains optimal during the whole game.
And how many gloves do you usually wear each year?
2 to 3 pairs a year
Which brands did you play with before you discovered Prostar?
With his 20 springs Xander has been a goalkeeper for many years and has found many brands in his sports bag. In the past he has played with Nike, stanno, real, uhlsport, goalkeepersaction (this is from a dutch goalkeeper school), jako, adidas and adidas. If there is anyone who can tell us the differences then we are sure it is Xander!
Why did you start playing with ProStar or are you still playing with ProStar and didn’t go back to a well-known brand?
Prostar did regularly appear on Xander Achtergael’s instagram account and was already carried by some of his followers. That’s why he started to compare the characteristics of the Prostar gloves with those of the other brands he had worn. And do you remember that there are a lot of them? As the features are similar to those of the top models of famous brands such as Uhlsport, Elite, Reusch, but for a much better price to get, Xander decided to order a pair to give it a try.
“From the very first moment these gloves felt perfect to me so I won’t be going to another brand any time soon”.
What’s the hardest thing for a goalkeeper?
Every goalkeeper has his good and less good points. As a goalkeeper, you’ll have to keep training hard for many years to make better points out of those less good points. In this way, as a goalkeeper, you can continue to make progress and get better and better. A less good characteristic of Xander Achtergael is the maintenance of his gloves. He should certainly pay more attention to that. And pay attention when you maintain your gloves well, the grip will not only be better, but you’ll also be able to enjoy them much longer.
The use of gloves makes them dirty all the time. Sometimes you will notice this, but sometimes you won’t. Just think of artificial turf fields. Sometimes you will hardly notice that your gloves have been used. Yet there is a lot of dirt such as sand on the latex of your gloves. If you do not maintain your gloves properly, this sand will play a very important role in the life and grip of your gloves. It is true that this sand will create a sandpaper effect when you slide your gloves over the grass. As a result, it will wear out much faster and your grip will be less good. Read our recommendations and try to clean the gloves at least once a week.
